Well these Highway 40 blues I've walked holes in both my shoes Counted the days since I've been gone And I'd love to see the lights of home Wasted time and money too Squandered youth in search of truth But in the end I had to lose Lord above I've paid my dues Got the Highway 40 blues The highway called when I was young Told me lies of things to come Fame and fortune lies ahead! That's what the billboard lights had said Shattered dreams my mind is numb My money's gone stick out my thumb My eyes are filled with bitter tears Lord I ain't been home in years Got the Highway 40 blues You know I've rambled all around Like a rolling stone from town to town Met pretty girls I have to say But none of them could make me stay Well I've played the music halls and bars Had fancy clothes and big fine cars Things a country boy can't use Dixieland, I sure miss you Got the Highway 40 blues

Walk On Boy 04:01
I was born one mornin' The rain is pourin' down Heard my mammy say to my pappy "Let's call him John Henry Brown" Walk on, boy Walk on down the road Ain't nobody in this whole wide world are gonna help you carry your load I left my mammy and pappy Just about the age of ten Lord, I got me job a workin' on the levee Toting water for the hard working men Walk on, boy Walk on down the road Ain't nobody in this whole wide world are gonna help you carry your load The rich man makes all the money While the poor man does all the work The rich mans there Sittin high on his horse While the poor mans livin on dirt One day my pappy told me "Some advice I wanna give to you Son, find a good woman, be good to her And she's gonna be good to you" Walk on boy Walk on down the road There ain't nobody in this whole wide world are gonna help you carry your load If anyone ever should ask you "Just who is that fella Brown?" You can tell him I'm the boy that left his hammer smokin' Where he beat that steam drill down Walk on boy Walk on down the road There ain't nobody in this whole wide world are gonna help you carry your load Walk on boy Walk on boy Walk on boy

Gloryland 03:28
I’ve a home prepared where the saints abide, Just over in the gloryland; And I long to be by my Savior’s side, Just over in the gloryland. Refrain: Just over in the gloryland, I’ll join the happy angel band, Just over in the gloryland; Just over in the gloryland, There with the mighty host I’ll stand, Just over in the gloryland. I am on my way to those mansions fair, Just over in the gloryland; There to sing God’s praise, and His glory share, Just over in the gloryland. [Refrain] What a joyful thought that my Lord I’ll see, Just over in the gloryland; And with kindred saved, there forever be, Just over in the gloryland. [Refrain] 4 With the bloodwashed throng I will shout and sing, Just over in the gloryland; Glad hosannas to Christ, the Lord and King, Just over in the gloryland.

As you read this letter that I write to you Sweetheart, I hope you'll understand That you're the only love I knew Please forgive me if you can Sweetheart, I beg you to come home tonight I'm so blue and all alone I promise that I'll treat you right Love, oh love, oh please come home That old wind is cold and slowly creeping around And the fire is burning low The snow has covered up the ground Your baby's hungry, sick and cold Sweetheart, I beg you to come home tonight I'm so blue and all alone I promise that I'll treat you right Love, oh love, oh please come home Sweetheart, I beg you to come home tonight I'm so blue and all alone I promise that I'll treat you right Love, oh love, oh please come home

Took my family away from our Carolina home Had dreams about the west and started to roam Six long months on a dust covered trail They say heaven's at the end But so far it's been hell And there's fire on the mountain Lightening in the air Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there We were digging and shifting from five to five Selling everything we found just to stay alive Gold flowed free like the whiskey in the bars Sinning was the big thin Lord And Satan was the star And there's fire on the mountain Lightening in the air Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there Dance hall girls were the evening treat Empty cartridges and blood lined the gutters of the street Men were shot down for the sake of fun Or just to hear the noise of their 44 guns And there's fire on the mountain Lightening in the air Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there Now my widow, she weeps by my grave Tears flow free for her man she couldn't save Shot down in cold blood by a gun that carried fame All for a useless and no good worthless claim And there's fire on the mountain Lightening in the air Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there Fire on the mountain Lightening in the air Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there Waiting for me there

Falling leaves that lie scattered on the ground The birds and flowers that were here now can't be found All my friends that I once had are not around They are scattered like the leaves upon the ground Some folks drift along through life and never thrill To the feeling that a good deed brings until It's too late, and they are ready to lie down They're beneath the leaves that's scattered on the ground To your grave, there's no use taking any gold You cannot use it when it's time for hands to fold When you leave this earth for a better home someday The only thing you'll take is what you gave away Lord, let my eyes see every need for every man Make me stop and always lend a helping hand Then when I'm laid beneath that little grassy mound There'll be more friends around than leaves upon the ground

Dixie Pig 02:35
See that place where the Rite Aid is? That used to be the Dixie pig, all-around route one the best place to eat, anytime you go you get a treat. Don't ask nobody else just look there for yourself The Dixie pig has said goodbye, and left us all to sit and cry, where will we get our barbecue? Or bacon eggs and steak on the grill? Trucks going south on a long long haul, or victims two of urban sprawl, at the Dixie pig they all took five, now it's pedal to the metal down 95 Don't ask nobody else just look there for yourself

Once I was a young man Strong and in my prime I went out dancing every night And drank a little wine But the years have come and gone They sure have been unkind Now I’m just rusty all the time

A miner was leavin' his home for his work When he heard his little child scream He went to the side of the little one there Oh, Daddy, I've had such a dream Oh, Daddy, don't go to the mines today For dreams have so often come true Oh, Daddy, dear Daddy, please don't go away I never could live without you I dreamed that the mines were all blazing with fire And the miners all fought for their lives The families seemed changed, and the mouth of the mine Was covered with sweetheart and wives Oh, Daddy, don't go to the mines today For dreams have so often come true Oh, Daddy, dear Daddy, please don't go away I never could live without you Go down to the village and tell all your friends As sure as the bright sun does shine There's something that's going to happen today Oh , Daddy, don't go to that mine Oh, Daddy, don't go to the mines today For dreams have so often come true Oh, Daddy, dear Daddy, please don't go away I never could live without you

Returning to my hometown got the pedal of the truck down to the floor, Get there by the interstate don’t have to use the back roads anymore, Been too long since I’ve been there my life is going nowhere, Always rushing to forget the past I’m looking back The Dairy Queen and corner store, the flag still in the center of the town, The river winds its way between old mine-shafts where silent whistles sound Finally got up the nerve, sent my truck around the curve, down the lane where memories remain, I’m looking back From the road it looked the same, Bricks laid by my Uncle’s loving hand Strangers planting flowers where the giant weeping willow use to stand Didn’t let them see my face, now satisfied no need to race, Took my time, went the back roads home I’m looking back I’m looking back
